Watch Party | Speakers for the Dead

Join us for a screening of Speakers for the Dead, a powerful documentary that uncovers a little-known chapter of Black history in Canada. In rural Ontario in the 1930s, the tombstones of a Black cemetery were buried to make way for a potato field. Decades later, descendants of the original Black and White settlers came together to restore the cemetery, bringing long-buried histories and painful racial tensions to the surface. After the film, stay for a conversation with Community Development Coordinator from the City of St. Albert, Abdulmajid Jimale and Anti-Racism Educator Toni Harrison, who together will explore the film’s themes and more. Presented in partnership with the City of St. Albert, St. Albert Public Library, Africans & African Descendant Friendship Club of St. Albert, and the National Film Board of Canada. Runtime: 49 min

You’ll be lying on your yoga mat as you’re gently led with words to calm your thoughts, relieve stress, and bring you into the present moment. All that’s needed is an open mind, a willingness to rest, and space to let the sounds and guidance carry you. You can participate in a chair. Or you can bring these items to the session: Yoga mat Pillow (optional) Blanket (optional) Please note: the sound bath live music portion of the meditation may not be suitable for individuals who are sensitive to sound vibrations, pregnant women, and individuals with epilepsy or seizure disorders.
