Friday Family Fun Night brings families to the MAG for an evening of something different. The theme changes every time, from hands-on making to games to seasonal celebrations, but it is always drop-in, always at your own pace, and always designed for a range of ages. Come when it works and stay as long as it is going well. Bring the kids for a Friday night of games in Remarkable Red Deer and Gallery 1. Board games spread across the tables, oversized games on the floor, active games for the ones who need to move, and puzzles and strategy games for the ones who’d rather think it through. We’ll be getting up to nothing but good from 6-8pm. Come when it works, stay as long as it’s going well, and let the galleries do the entertaining for a couple of hours. The Flyathlon is a multi-sport event that integrates three activities: trail running, fishing, and craft beer. While many enjoy these activities independently, we have found over the years that putting them together is even more enjoyable. The overwhelming majority of funds raised by our Flyathletes through this event will be used for freshwater ecosystems. The Flyathlon is designed to be largely inclusive rather than truly competitive. The Flyathlon seeks to break down barriers through accessible events that create positive and fishy outdoor experiences and memories. It is our hope that through this type of exposure, we can create new outdoor advocates. The Flyathlon is designed specifically to promote responsible fishing practices and trail habits. You have walked past them. The bronze figures scattered through downtown are the Ghosts of Red Deer , one of the largest collections of life-size bronze sculpture in Canada. We willing to be most people who live here could not name a single one. There is a hockey face-off, a firefighter, a railway worker arguing with a small dog over a pile of money, and a pig who became a local legend. Each Ghost stands for a person, a piece of folklore, or a way of life that shaped our city, created by local and provincial artists and commissioned through the Downtown Business Association. You can find the Ghosts on your own any day of the week. What you get on this walk is the part that is not on the plaque: who these people actually were, why they earned a statue, and what was happening in Red Deer at the time. This ceremony provides an opportunity to reflect, remember and honour the sacrifices made by our colleagues and their families. You have probably walked past the Capitol Theatre and the old train station a hundred times. This is the tour that tells you what happened inside them. Join one of our staff for a guided walk through Remarkable Red Deer , our 4,800 square foot permanent history exhibition. You will hear about the Stephenson Hall Block, Red Deer’s first commercial building, the Club Cafe and its jukebox, and a handful of national firsts that were developed right here and that most locals have never heard of. Bring a friend, ask the awkward questions, and expect a few stories that did not make it onto the exhibit panels. Our staff know this material well and the conversation usually goes wherever the group takes it. Wednesday, September 16, 2026, starting at 2PM. Parkinson Step 'n Stride – Red Deer Join the Parkinson Association of Alberta for our 14th annual Parkinson Step 'n Stride! This community fundraising walk takes place Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at McKenzie Park . Step 'n Stride brings together participants, families, volunteers, and community partners in support of the more than 15,000 Albertans living with and affected by Parkinson's disease. As the only standalone charitable organization in Alberta dedicated to Parkinson's support, services, and education, funds raised at this event go directly toward continuing that work. CanSkate is Skate Canada’s learn-to-skate program designed for beginners of all ages. Through fun, engaging activities and nationally developed teaching methods, skaters build confidence while developing fundamental skating skills such as balance, control, agility, and coordination. At Momentum Skating Academy, our CanSkate sessions focus on creating a positive, supportive environment where skaters can progress at their own pace. Skills learned in CanSkate provide a strong foundation for figure skating, hockey, ringette, speed skating, and recreational skating. 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and youth allies aged 13-20 can come to the downtown public library's "green room" every Wednesday from 5:30-8 PM to hang out with their peers. We do board games, crafts, chat, have snacks, watch movies, and whatever you choose for the time. The second Wednesday of each month is in the Cafe room at the Red Deer Museum, same time.
We have moved to the Red Deer Museum and Gallery and meet the fourth Wednesday of each month from 5:30 - 7:30 PM. Bring a project to work on and your supplies - if you are stuck, some supplies may be available to start something new. All ages, family-friendly, and free. Art Speaks is a learning series developed and delivered in partnership with the Red Deer Arts Council. oin presenter Betty Oldham for an exploration of Hardanger embroidery, a striking form of Norwegian cutwork with roots reaching back through earlier Asian and European needlework traditions. In Norway’s Hardanger region, embroiderers refined the distinctive open, geometric techniques that would come to decorate everything from everyday clothing to treasured household linens. When Norwegian immigrants settled in North America, they carried the tradition with them, and it continued to evolve into the Hardanger embroidery recognized today. Betty will trace that journey, from the earliest delicate silk and gauze lace through to the crisp linen and cotton work of more recent generations.
