With several major infrastructure projects on the horizon, you'll work alongside a collaborative team to deliver improvements that will have a lasting impact on Medicine Hat.

We're a team that believes how we work is just as important as the work we do. Grounded in our values - Own It, Team Up, Be Curious, and Service with Care - we're committed to delivering meaningful impact for our community while supporting each other along the way.

How you'll own it

  • Lead municipal infrastructure projects from planning and design through tendering, construction, and commissioning.
  • Coordinate the delivery of road improvements, stormwater infrastructure, traffic projects, and other municipal engineering initiatives.
  • Review engineering designs, technical drawings, and specification to ensure compliance with municipal standards and servicing requirements.
  • Provide technical engineering advice on transportation systems, stormwater management, development proposals, and related infrastructure matters.
  • Coordinate project approvals, public engagement, regulatory requirements, and communication with internal and external partners.
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, consultants, and contractors to support successful project delivery.
  • Prepare capital plans, project estimates, business cases, and funding applications to support municipal infrastructure priorities.
  • Research and apply engineering best practices, technical standards, and innovative approaches to infrastructure planning and design.
  • Represent Municipal Works Engineering on committees and collaborate with other City departments, developers, consultants, and government agencies.
  • Engage with residents and the public through open houses, project consultations, and on-site conversations, responding to concerns and working toward practical solutions.

What you bring

  • Hands-on experience with civil engineering design, technical reviews, and infrastructure project delivery.
  • Knowledge of transportation infrastructure, road design, stormwater management, drainage systems, or related municipal infrastructure.
  • Strong project coordination and organizational skills, with the ability to manage timelines, competing priorities, and project requirements.
  • An understanding of engineering standards, regulatory requirements, construction practices, and contract administration.
  • The ability to communicate technical information clearly to colleagues, consultants, contractors, and members of the public.
  • Confidence engaging with residents and addressing questions or concerns professionally, including at public open houses and construction sites.
  • A collaborative approach, with the initiative to work independently while contributing to a supportive engineering team.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, sound professional judgment, and a commitment to delivering quality work.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 and familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), with the ability to learn new technical applications.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, preferably with a municipal engineering major, from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Preference for six (6) years of related professional engineering experience in transportation and stormwater management systems planning, design, and project management. Municipal engineering or consulting experience is preferred.
  • Professional registration with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
  • A Road Safety Professional (RSP) designation and/or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification would be considered an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
